Quiet residential area with little traffic & less touristy
Availability of long term housing
Further from restaurants and shops
Lower Tapovan spreads out over a large area directly behind the German Bakery at Laxman Jhula bridge all the way to the main Badrinath Road at the top. It is a quieter area with little traffic and unlike the other areas, it is a mixed residential area for both locals and tourists. Many newer guesthouses and yoga retreat centers are located here. Longer term stayers will find it easier to rent a room here with kitchen facilities. Depending on where you stay in Lower Tapovan, some parts are not as accessible to shops and restaurants compared to the main tourist areas near the two bridges. The streets here which leads to the main areas in Laxman Jhula can be rather quiet and dark at night. Much of Tapovan, including Upper Tapovan, feels more like a residential area and less of a tourist spot.
Getting to Lower Tapovan can be more challenging depending on where you stay and how you travel here. Some parts are connected to the main road with car access roads making it easy for private cars and taxis to reach. However, no other public transportation goes to Lower Tapovan. You will need to stop at the autorickshaw stand at the main road near the top of Laxman Jhula, and walk quite some distance. The small streets in the area can make it potentially easy to get lost so it is recommendable that you ask for clear directions from your guesthouse before arriving.
